Important Themes
In all of the following examples of important themes,
found by Professor Rips, he followed a
protocol that he started using almost from the beginning of his research
in the late 1970's:
first, identify a set of phrases associated with an important theme,
such as the three themes reviewed here; second, find these in the
text as ELS's; third, see if the ELS's - particularly those with
near-minimal skip - are located
near
underlying verses that have a strong
connection to the phrase.
This third step can be subjective,
and
therefore it is difficult to pin down its significance
for each individual case. However,
we see in far more cases than statistically expected, definite
links between the verses
and the ELS's. Sometimes these are undeniable - for example
the one and only ELS succeeds; or
the related verse contains an exact match for one
or both words in the phrase.
Below are a small sampling of interesting examples, from a series of
three important themes. The themes are:
Nouns that include G-d's name
Famous couples in the Bible, and
The attributes of G-d, from daily Jewish prayers
If it were possible to quantify this category, it might be the most
significant, because the overall success rate is extremely high.
